20 Different Paint Defects – Painting defects are several types and occur during application or after the paint application. To maintain good quality and prevent defects, the applicators should be trained and an awareness of the quality requirements should be explained such as the preventions measures of defects.
Another main reason for almost all the 20 Different Paint Defects to prevent is to strictly follow and constantly monitor the weather conditions prior to work activities.
Following are the 20 Different Paint Defects – most common paint defects found in industrial coating –
1. Adhesion Failure
Surface infection or condensation, incompatibility among coating systems, or exceeding the overcoating time.
2. Blooming
When the poor quality of paint is applied and when the ventilation is improper one can find dull patches which are known as blooming.
3. Bleeding
The current paint film leeches out of the wall because of using incompatible coats or thinner. To keep away from this, use the right application technique for suitable coating as recommended by the paint manufacturer.
4. Blistering
The swelling of the paint film, swelling is because of oil/grease or moisture on the surface prior to application. Blistering occurs due to entrapment. Hence, weather condition shall be monitored prior to paint application.
5. Crawling
Crawling occurs when the painting is carried over the surfaces that contain sand, dust and oil or grease which are not prepared well before applying paint will lead to crawling defects.
6. Cracking
Cracking mainly occurs due to stress-associated failure and may be attributed to floor movement, ageing, absorptions and desorption of moisture. Thicker the paint film, the more the possibility of cracking.
7. Crating
The use of infected gear of painting over unprepared surfaces causes small bowl-formed depressions at the surfaces called crating.
8. Crazing
When painting works is carried out when the atmospheric temperature is low or when there are incompatibility issues with the previous coating or due to ageing or high film thickness this defect will occur.
9. Chalking
Formation of powder on the paint surface, which is due to mainly insufficient oil in primer.
10. Delamination
The main reason for delamination defects is generally related to poor surface preparation and application defects, such as contamination between coats, exceeding overcoat times or application on a glossy surface
11. Flaking
Flaking occurs due to a lack of adhesion between the paint and the surface.
20 Different Paint Defects in Painting
12. Flashing
Presence of glossy patches on the painted surface, the main causes are due to poor quality of paint applied, due to bad weather conditions or due to poor workmanship
13. Fading
Fading occurs due to discolouration of paint surface or a gradual loss in colour which is due to atmospheric effects such as fading of pigments.
14. Orange Peel
When there is a failure of the paint to flow out easily Orange Peels occur. Such defect causes due to poor paint application techniques or due to incorrect solvent mixing.
15. Loss of Gloss
Insufficient or excessive dilution of paint and application on rough surfaces reduces the glossy feature after drying.
16. Mud Cracking
Mud cracking defect is caused when over-application of heavily pigmented primers such as inorganic zinc silicates or water-based coatings, although can occur with over thick paint systems.
17. Skinning
The skinning defect occurs due to the formation of a layer of skin on the container. To prevent such defects the container should be kept airtight and as far as possible use it soonest as possible.
18. Sagging
Dripping of paint downwards at the surface after the application is known as sagging, when a painting of immoderate thick layers on the existing coating without proper sanding is carried out such defect will occur.
19. Saponification
When there are Alkalies chemical reactions soapy kind of patches are formed on the coated surfaces.
20. Wrinkling
Wrinkling defect usually occurs when applying thick Oil Alkyd paint over insufficiently dried coating that leads to the formation of film wrinkling.
